100th Anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance was established to encourage, promote, and document recognition of the Harlem Renaissance Centennial. A major part of that initiative was to first determine a kick-off date based on a definitive or appropriately representative year of the Harlem Renaissance. The year 2020 was proposed to launch not just a year of activities and observations commemorating the renaissance but a decade of planned projects to confirm, cement, and ensure preservation of the movement’s ongoing cultural, political, and spiritual significance across the globe. However, there were those who proposed official observations should have begun in 2019 to coincide with the centennial of the 369th Regiment Band's return to Harlem, New York City, in February 1919.
